NOTES FROM PENARTH PEERS WI MEETING – 14th FEBRUARY 2024
The meeting was opened at 7pm by Linda Prytherch. Linda introduced the evening’s speaker, Siobhan Hayes, National Trust Volunteer Archivist from Tredegar House.
Talk on Tredegar House
Siobhan outlined some of the history of Tredegar House, explaining that, over time, there had been 3 different houses on the site, the current house having been built by William Morgan in the seventeenth century. The house was sold in 1951 to pay off death duties and was subsequently converted to a girls’ school. In 1976 the house was sold to Newport Council and in 2012 the National Trust took it over on a 50-year lease. Siobhan used slides to show interesting features of the various rooms and told fascinating stories about the lives of the characters who had lived there. She explained how the family had become wealthy through developing the docks at Newport and were involved in shipping and industrial interests.
Linda thanked Siobhan for a very interesting talk; she asked members to think about ideas for a suitable subsidised trip, involving an educational or cultural element, possibly a visit to a historical house.
Subscriptions – due on 1st April, subscriptions can be paid during March either by cash, bank transfer or cheque. Rosemary will circulate details.
Glamorgan Federation Annual meeting, Port Talbot – the speaker will be Sue Kent from Gardeners’ World. Penarth Peers can send a delegate to the meeting; transport will be paid. Please see Linda if interested.
June Humphries, retirement – June has worked for WI for some 20 years. There are two spaces per WI to attend her celebratory lunch. The lunch will be in the Orangery, costing £28.50 for 2 courses. If interested, the organisers need to know straight away.
Spring Walk – to take place in Penarth on 11th May, the cost will be £3. The walks can be reasonably energetic, but walkers can stop off en route if needed. These events will be posted on the bulletin board.
WI Groups – the theatre group is going well; there are several bookclubs on offer; the craft group is assembled to respond to need; the quiz group is not currently active. Linda asked members for suggestions about any other interest groups they might like to see running, for example, painting, knitting etc.
Craft coffee morning – will be held some time during late spring to raise money for a charity. Donations have already been made to Tabernacle and Women’s Refuge. Linda asked for any suggestions for a local charity, possibly with a profile of helping women. The aim is to is to hold a yearly charity fundraising event in the meeting hall.
The raffle was drawn and the meeting closed at 9p
