NOTES FROM PENARTH PEERS WI MEETING JANUARY 11TH 2023
Julie opened our first meeting of the new year with telling us about the two police officers from South Wales Police who had come to offer advice on fraud that is prevalent in South Wales and to make sure we can protect ourselves from becoming Victims of crime. She also mentioned Health and Safety with regard to our use of the hall.
She introduced Ian Roache and his colleague from South Wales Police.
They said that scale of frauds is enormous and they deal with :- 1. Economic and cyber crimes 2. Sexual and violence crime 3. Payment card fraud. Debit and credit cards.4. Anti social behaviour. 5. Vehicle crime.6. Money laundering.
They are experts in debit and credit card fraud and wanted us to know what is happening locally.
They assist in local Investigations as well as major crimes both here in Wales and also the rest of uk
They are expert in giving fraud advice re counterfeit credit cards, debit cards, advance fee fraud and phishing expedition. They were also involved in Election investigations as well
The Economic crime unit deals with victims of crime and the victims are very often between the ages of 41 to 60. The cost to the economy is enormous. In 2021 £1.3 billion was lost to economic fraud. These frauds threaten legitimate businesses.
There is a Suckers list that the criminals use which is sold on to other criminals. They also deal with fraud regarding Pensions. There are many and varied frauds going on all the time and they gave us details of who to contact if we ever need assistance. The Victims of these crimes often have changes in behaviour, they become withdrawn, lose confidence and are often embarrassed and ashamed.
You must protect yourself. Make sure you secure your websites with extra security.
What can you do to protect yourself.

There is a National Cyber security centre and a website. NCSC.Gov.uk.
Emails report @phishing.gov.uk.
For extra protection for yourself you can put on Multi factional authentication hitch is in 3 layers. - A. A pin or passcode.
B. A verification Code or Password
C. Something you are ... A scan of fingerprints, scan of face or retina.
