NOTES FROM PENARTH PEERS WI MEETING JUNE 14TH 2023
Rosemary opened the meeting, standing in for Julie. Julie thanked the group for the flowers after her recent hospital stay.
Joyce gave a resume of the recent NFWI conference: main points were that WI membership has increased to 185,000, a resolution regarding bathing quality in rivers was passed, there were two main speakers, a cricketer/sports presenter, and a footballer, both being motivational speakers for women’s issues.
Announcements made by Rosemary were:
Margam Park picnic – tickets have been distributed, leaving Dinas at 10 o’clock
Malvern Flower Show 24th September – the closing date is 14th July
Flower Festival Margam Abbey – to be held from 17-19 August
Royal Welsh Show – Dinas Powys is organising a trip on Tuesday 25th July, tickets will be approximately £35
Rosemary then introduced Glen Brooker (and assistant Jordan) to present the talk on G.I. brides. Glen is part of Barry War Group, which manages Barry War Museum. Glen explained that the American soldiers were stationed in Penarth because their war ships were moored in Penarth and Barry Docks. Local people were encouraged to welcome the soldiers into their homes, some formed relationships with, and later married, girls from Penarth. Glen gave an interesting insight into the lives of the brides who emigrated to America to join their husbands after the war. The talk closed with the group joining in with singing ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’.
Rosemary thanked Glen and Jordan for a very interesting talk, and also thanked the tea hostesses, Angela, Tessa and Liz.
Wendy told the group of the success of POD’s at the recent ‘Glammie’ awards, where PODs won best actor, best director and best musical production for The Full Monty. The next production will be Shakespeare in Love, followed by The Producers.
