NOTES FROM PENARTH PEERS WI MEETING – 10th JANUARY 2024
The meeting was opened by Julie Davies at 7pm. She noted the good turnout, despite the cold weather, and wished everyone a happy and healthy 2024. Julie then read out the list of resolutions set out by the National Federation of the WI and asked members to think about which one they would like to see carried forward.
Julie introduced the evening’s entertainment provided by ‘Ukelele Nights’. Collection buckets were placed around the hall; money raised will go to MND charity.
Members enjoyed a lively and fun-filled performance from the group, singing and clapping along to old favourites.
Results of the vote on resolutions were:
1. Dental health matters – 11 votes
2. Impact of poor housing conditions – 21 votes
3. Say no to gambling advertising – 7 votes
4. Improving outcomes for women in the criminal justice system – 4 votes
Yearly subs – are due by 1st April. There has been a slight increase to £48. Julie reminded members of the benefits of membership – trips, conferences, monthly magazine etc.
PODs – Wendy told the group about the next production ‘Shakespeare in Love’, running from Wednesday 20th – Saturday 23rd March. Tickets are £15 (£14.50 for a group of 10 or more). If interested, please add names to the list and Julie will organise the trip. Wednesday was agreed to be the best day to attend. ‘The Producers’ is in rehearsal, to be shown on May 20th, tickets will be £16.
Raising money for charity – Julie suggested some ideas including a coffee morning, tombola, decorating a bra and paying £1 to wear to a meeting over clothes etc.
Accounts – the financial accounts have been completed for the year. It was agreed that the money collected in the buckets for the ukelele evening would go to MND, and the £50 fee paid to the ukelele group (via Anita) would go to their new charity, when decided.
Food bank Christmas contributions – Julie read out a thank you card received from Rev Dave Lllewellyn and all at the food bank.
Tea Hostesses – Brenda, Jane and Jenny were thanked; next month’s tea hostesses are Heather, Gaynor and Barbara. Volunteers are needed for teas - please see Lyn to sign up.
Forthcoming talks – a work in progress, some interesting talks are already booked in. it was agreed that last year’s programme was informative and successful. Next month’s speaker is Emily Price from the National Trust.
Port Talbot – speaker at Princes Royal Theatre is Sue Kent, a presenter on Gardeners World. Julie asked for anyone interested in attending as a delegate to let her know before 23rd February.
Wales Annual Conference, Brecon – April 4th in Brecon Theatre. There will be a speaker in the morning followed by a choice of activities in the afternoon, Rosemary has details.
Civic Society – Anne Evans , Chair of Penarth Civic Society, told members about Penarth Tree Forum, set up because residents are concerned about losing trees from the town. The Vale Council has produced a tree strategy. A meeting to hear about the strategy and make comments is provisionally due to be held on Thursday 14th March 7pm, either at Belle Vue or St. Augustines. WI members are encouraged to attend if interested.
